The concept of the parachute was first sketched by Leonardo da Vinci, but the first practical demonstration was in 1783 by Louis-Sébastien Lenormand in France. The first successful jump from a great height was made by André-Jacques Garnerin in 1797 from a hot air balloon. Parachutes became critical for pilot safety after their adoption by air forces during World War I.
